Finally….a Hummingbird!

My first sighting of the summer.  It was raining and of course, my camera was no where near, when the hummingbird appeared.  And then he was gone.  When he returned, about 20 minutes later, I was ready.  No fancy setup.  Handheld my camera and shot through the window.  A few quick frames and he was gone again.  Checking my birding book, this is an immature female Ruby-throated Hummingbird.  If that’s not correct, please let me know.

  1. NIce shot Holly. This is a female ruby-throat, you’re right. This is the only type of hummingbird typically found east of the Mississippi. Of course there is always the exception to the rule. You might see another type in the winter months. Typically their feeding is a routine. They will generally show up at the feeder every 15 or 20 minutes unless of course there is another source of food in your area. They will usually not stay on the feeder more than 15 seconds (generally). They are very territorial and will drive off another hummer. To do this effectively they like to roost within eyesight of the feeder, preferably in a tree. If you go out and sit within 5 or 6 feet of the feeder that will not cause them any concern. You will hear them usually before you see them. Their wings sound much like a cat’s purr as they approach.

I’m waiting for you to come over and shoot my hummers and some of the dazzling dragonflies found on the ponds around here.

  2. Hi Holly. I found my way here via your kind comment on my own blog. From my location in North East England it seems incredible that you can see this through your window. Brilliant. I look forward to reading through more of your site over the next few days.
    Best wishes
